Description / Abstract: GMW16922, 2nd Edition, October 2018 - Propulsion Systems Pressure Spray Wash Test Procedure

Introduction

Note:

Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.

Note:

In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.

Purpose.

The purpose of this test procedure is to determine the robustness of propulsion system components to withstand exposure to high pressure spray wash. This robustness characterization may include properties of: fastening, adhesion, lamination, erosion, and appearance.

Applicability.

This test procedure applies to propulsion system (i.e., engine, hybrid, electric drive) compartment components which may experience in-vehicle field exposure to high pressure spray wash. This component exposure shall be considered with components in proper vehicle installed position and orientation. Typically, these components may be considered as those located in upper regions of the propulsion system compartment, which may be more easily and directly accessed by a high pressure spray washer.

Remarks.

A high pressure spray wash is a fluid spray, typically consisting of tap water, at a given flow pressure and volumetric flow rate. A high pressure spray washer may be utilized by the vehicle operator to clean the propulsion system components, as considered in the vehicle installed exposure condition and position.

A vehicle operator pressure spray wash example may be considered as a car wash hand operated coin spray washer (i.e., range approximately 55 bar to 110 bar). In addition, a vehicle operator/home owner high pressure spray wash example may be considered as a mobile electric (i.e., range approximately 80 bar to 140 bar) or gas (i.e., range approximately 170 bar to 240 bar) motor power driven pump type sprayer.
