Application

This procedure defines the self-pierce riveting acceptance test for rivet schedule development. All material must pass minimum performance testing. Consult the appropriate Engineering Material Specification for material exceptions. The procedure is used to evaluate a rivet and die combination, the results evaluate characteristics of a joint for a given gauge and alloy of sheet metal. Cross sections of the riveted joint must be evaluated to ensure a robust self-pierce rivet (SPR) joint. After the correct rivet and die have been identified, lap shear and coach peel samples are assembled and tested.

Materials must not be tested unless they are certified and within specification. A materials’ certification sheet should be provided with any material for testing. The material certification should be checked against the material specification. The material should be checked for thickness and labeled with critical information (supplier, coil/lot #, annealed solution heat treat date, chemical composition, yield strength, ultimate strength, elongation at failure, etc.) Materials should be representative of the condition that will be joined in production including coatings, heat treatment, lubricants, and mechanical properties, etc.

All samples should be retained. Samples should be returned to Ford Motor Company at request.
